CAPE TOWN Lieutenant-General Sizakhele William Dyantyi has been appointed as the new Provincial Police Commissioner for the Western Cape, taking the helm at a critical juncture as the province battles soaring levels of gang violence, extortion, and organized crime.
The announcement was made in Cape Town on Wednesday by Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane. Dimpane emphasized that the appointment followed a rigorous selection process designed to identify a leader capable of driving the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) strategic “Reset Agenda.”
“It was not about filling a vacancy,” Dimpane stated. “It was about identifying a leader capable of reading the current temperature of policing in South Africa and more specifically in the Western Cape a leader who possesses the operational competence, strategic foresight, and ethical leadership required to drive organizational renewal.”
Dyantyi, who officially assumes office on August 1, replaces Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile following his retirement at the end of June. Major-General Luyanda Damoyi had been serving as acting provincial commissioner during the transition.
Bringing over 34 years of police service to the role, Dyantyi began his SAPS career in 1994 as a student constable in Elliot before serving as a dog handler in the K9 Unit. His career trajectory spans both urban and rural operational environments across the Eastern and Western Cape, including postings in Nyanga, Paarl, Mbekweni, Mthatha, and most recently as West Coast District Commissioner.
SAPS noted that Dyantyi holds a Master’s Degree, an Honours Degree, a Bachelor of Technology Degree, and a National Diploma in Policing.
Dyantyi’s appointment comes amid a wave of recent violent incidents in Cape Town, where 11 people were killed in separate shootings over a single weekend. He will oversee 152 police stations across six policing districts.
Addressing the broader implications of safety in the province, Dimpane highlighted the link between public security and economic stability.
“The Western Cape remains one of South Africa’s economic powerhouses. Safety and economic growth are inseparable,” Dimpane noted. “The Provincial Commissioner carries a broader responsibility toward creating conditions that strengthen business confidence, protect economic infrastructure, and contribute meaningfully to the province’s growth.”
Dyantyi’s prior tenure as West Coast District Commissioner previously drew criticism in 2023 from civil society group Action Society over state expenditure on hotel accommodation. SAPS defended the arrangement at the time as a necessary operational decision, and no findings of misconduct or criminal charges were ever brought.
Dimpane called on Dyantyi to maintain a visible leadership presence, build strong community partnerships, and enforce an uncompromising stance against internal corruption and syndicate networks.
